Labels inside labels
Put one label inside another, up to three levels deep. A group’s view lists everything inside it, its count covers them all, and a search can find a label by its path.

What it does
Labels with structure
Up to three levels
A label, one inside it, and one inside that, shown in the sidebar under a chevron.
A group shows it all
Open a group and its view lists every conversation labelled with anything inside it.
Counts that add up
A folded group counts the open conversations of everything inside it, each one once.
Find one by its path
Search for label:"Clients/Kyma Customs" to find a label inside another by its path.
How it works
Make, nest, use
- 1
Make the label
Create it in Settings › Labels, or from the label picker where you are allowed.
- 2
Put it inside
In New label or Edit label choose Put it inside, or drag labels onto each other in Settings.
- 3
Use it as usual
Label conversations as before. In the sidebar, a chevron folds and opens each group.
Good to know
The details
- Who can use it
- Administrators choose who can create and edit labels, in Settings › Permissions.
- Where it can be used
- A label inside another can only be used where the outer one can: everywhere, chosen teams or chosen mailboxes.
- Limits
- Three levels at most. A name can be up to 40 characters and must differ from its neighbours at the same level.
- Deleting a group
- You choose to keep the labels inside, which move up a level, or delete them too. Conversations stay where they are.
- For developers
- The labels API takes a parentId, so labels can be created and moved inside others.
