A colleague writing a reply shows on the conversation’s row in the list too, before you open it.
A warning, not a wall
A strip warns you when someone else is replying, and Send asks first if their reply went out meanwhile.
Typing and away
A typing line shows in team chat, and someone idle for two minutes shows as away.

Others see that you are writing one, in the conversation and on its row in the list.

Decide together
Leave it to your colleague, which keeps what you typed as a draft, or keep writing. Each of you sees the same warning.
