Unread, total or both
Right-click any item in the sidebar to show its unread count, its total or both. A count such as 24 / 186 shows both, and your choice follows you to every device.

For each item, tick Unread count, Total count or both.
Any item
Views, labels, teams, mailboxes and the views inside a mailbox.
Hover to be sure
Hover over the numbers and the tooltip says what each one counts.
On a phone too
Long-press an item to choose. Your choices are the same on every device.

Right-click a view, label, team or mailbox in the sidebar, or long-press it on a phone.

Under Show beside it, tick Unread count, Total count or both.

Start again if you like
Reset to default in Customize sidebar puts the numbers back as they were, and the layout with them.
Good to know
The details
- Who can use it
- Everyone, for their own sidebar. Nobody else’s counts change.
- Before you choose
- Until you choose, each item shows the number it always did, such as unread for the Inbox and open conversations for a label.
- Long numbers
- Totals above 9,999 are written short, such as 12.8k, and past 100,000 as 100k+.
- Not the same as
- The badge on a conversation with several messages is separate: Settings › Appearance › Message counts.
