Virus protection
Every file that arrives, every file you attach and every large file you share is checked for viruses on our own servers, never by an outside service. A harmful file is blocked before anyone can open it.

What it does
Checked before it opens
Every file, every way in
Mail as it arrives, files you attach before you send, large files before their link is made, and imported history.
On our own servers
The scanner runs in its own sealed container with no network access, so no file goes to an outside service.
Blocked, not just flagged
A file with a virus can’t be opened, previewed, downloaded, forwarded or sent. Hover it to see the threat’s name.
Released if it is a false alarm
Anyone who can see the conversation can request a release. Administrators decide, and every release is recorded.
How it works
Checked as it arrives
- 1
A file comes in
It shows Checking… for a moment. Send waits for the check, as it waits for an upload.
- 2
It is checked
A clean file opens as usual. A file with a virus is blocked, and the rest of the message stays readable.
- 3
Administrators decide
In Settings › Virus protection they see what was blocked, release or delete it, and choose to warn about or block risky file types.
Good to know
The details
- Who can use it
- It is always on, for every organisation. Settings › Virus protection is for administrators, and who may release a file is a permission.
- Risky file types
- Programs and scripts, Office files with macros, disk images and shortcuts, and password-protected archives each warn or are blocked, as administrators choose.
- Kept up to date
- New virus definitions arrive every two hours. When they change, the last seven days of files and every live link are checked again.
- Limits
- Files up to 100 MB are checked. An archive that unpacks past 256 MB, 16 levels or 10,000 files is blocked, never let through.
- Older mail
- Files from before virus protection show Not checked yet until an administrator checks them, from Settings › Virus protection.
