On 30 October, DMU Mail started working with Claude. You connect your own Claude account, and Claude can search and read your mail, write drafts for you and keep conversations organised. The rule that matters most is short: Claude drafts, and a person checks and sends.
In short
Claude can search and read your conversations, write drafts and organise them. It can never send, forward or delete.
It is off until an administrator allows it in Settings › Organisation › Connected apps.
Each person connects it from Claude, in the Connectors directory or as a custom connector.
What Claude can do
It searches your conversations and reads them, with their team chat and the text of attached documents and spreadsheets.
It writes a reply or a new email. The draft waits in Drafts, marked "Written with Claude", until you check it and send it.
It assigns conversations to people, adds or removes labels, closes and reopens, snoozes, and marks as read or unread.
So you can ask Claude for what is assigned to you, a summary of a long conversation with its team chat, or a first draft of an answer to a customer. Then you read the draft, change what you want and send it yourself.
What Claude can never do
Send or forward an email, or add a Bcc.
Delete anything, move anything to Trash or Spam, or change anything that is already there.
Change settings, people, teams or permissions.
See mail you can't open in DMU Mail.
Everything Claude changes is recorded in Activity and in the conversation's history as "via Claude", so a colleague can always see what happened.
How an administrator allows it
Claude is off for every organisation until an administrator turns it on.
Open Settings › Organisation › Connected apps and choose Allow Claude.
Open Settings › Permissions › Apps to decide who may connect it, and who may let it read shared mailboxes.
Once Claude is allowed, everyone may connect it, and only administrators may use it with shared mailboxes, unless an administrator changes that. Without that permission, Claude sees only your own mailboxes. An administrator can also disconnect anyone, or turn Claude off for everyone, from Settings › Organisation › Connected apps. It stops at once.
Your mail stays in DMU Mail
How a person connects it
Once your organisation allows it, you connect it from Claude. You can use the Connectors directory, or add it yourself.
In Claude, open Settings › Connectors, choose Browse, find DMU Mail and choose Connect.
If you can't find it there, choose Add custom connector and enter
https://mcp.dmu.email/mcp.Sign in to DMU Mail if you're asked to.
Choose the organisations Claude may use and what it may do. Reading is always included. Writing drafts and organising are yours to choose. Then choose Allow.
To disconnect it, open Settings › You › Connected apps in DMU Mail and choose Disconnect.

How to connect itWhere this fits
Claude is one way to get help with your mail. The Assistant is another, inside DMU Mail, with your own account at an AI provider. Both start off, both leave the decision to you, and neither sends on its own.
Use DMU Mail with Claude has the full steps, including Claude Code. The release is in the changelog.
