Searching

Click the search box at the top of the list, or press /. It says Search all mail, or Search this mailbox when you are inside one mailbox, or Search this team in a team’s view. A search stays where you started it. If it finds nothing, choose Search all mailboxes.

Search needs at least three characters. As you type, a list appears with matching conversations, the people you have mail with and any matching labels. Use the arrow keys and Enter, or click one. Enter on the first row, “Search all mail for…”, runs the full search. Your recent searches are kept in the sidebar.

What it finds

  • Subjects, the text of messages, the names and addresses of senders and recipients, and attachment file names.

  • Capitals and accents do not matter, so “τιμολογιο” finds “Τιμολόγιο”. Greek word endings are matched too: “τιμολογίου” finds “τιμολόγιο”.

  • Results are conversations, not single messages, and the best matches come first: a word in the subject or an address ranks above one in the body, then the newest.

  • It finds whole words and the beginning of a word in names, subjects, addresses and file names. It does not find a typo, or a piece from the middle of a word, and the beginning of a word is not matched in message text.

  • Trash is never searched.

You only see what you are allowed to see. A colleague’s private mailbox never appears in your results.

Several words
All of them must match: invoice september.
A phrase
Put it in quotes: "purchase order". A search with a phrase shows at most 50 conversations.
Either word
Use OR in capitals: invoice OR receipt.
Leave a word out
Put a minus before it: invoice -draft.
A label
Use label: and the name: label:invoices. Quote a name with spaces: label:"waiting on client". Add words after it to search within the label.
A person
Pick someone from the People suggestions to find every conversation with that address.

Looking for a command, not a message?

Press CtrlK for the command palette. It goes to a view, switches mailbox or acts on the open conversation, and letters in order are enough. The shortcuts have their own article, Keyboard shortcuts.
